How Fake Postal SMS Scams Work
Scammers send text messages from ordinary mobile numbers or fake sender names. The messages usually say:
- Your parcel has reached the sorting office but cannot be delivered because the address is incomplete.
- A small customs fee must be paid online within a short time, or the parcel will be sent back.
- You must open a short link, often made to look like a government website, to update your delivery details.
Distinguishing Genuine Postal Procedures
Knowing how the post office normally works helps protect your money and personal details:
- • Customs checks on parcels from abroad are done by customs officers, not through SMS links.
- • If you owe any fee, you will get a postal notice and can ask about it at your post office.
- • Pakistan Post tracking is on the government website: ep.gov.pk.
- • Customer support is on UAN 111-111-117 and mobile 051-111-111-117.
- • A demand to enter your card details online to release a parcel.
- • Links to strange web addresses, such as ones ending in .top or .xyz.
- • Threats of legal action or that your parcel will be destroyed.
- • Messages about a parcel you never sent or ordered.
What to Do If You Get a Suspicious Message
- Do not tap links: Do not tap short links or open attachments in messages from unknown numbers.
- Check on ep.gov.pk: Go to the Pakistan Post tracking website yourself at ep.gov.pk and type your tracking number by hand.
- Ask your local GPO: If you are expecting a parcel from abroad, visit your local General Post Office with your details and ask the staff to check it.
- Report it: Report the fake message and number to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) through its official complaint channels.
